WHO Consultation on draft sugars intake guideline
WHO issued a new draft guideline on sugars intake, and held an open public consultation on this draft guideline. The objective of this guideline is to provide recommendations on the consumption of free sugars to reduce the risk of NCDs in adults and children, with a particular focus on the prevention and control of obesity and dental issues including tooth decay.
The draft guideline includes a proposal that sugar should amount to less than 10% of daily energy intake, with additional benefits seen with limiting to less than 5% of daily energy intake (equivalent to approximately 5 teaspoons).
Given the topic’s high relevance to NCDs, the NCD Alliance submitted a detailed response, drawing upon input from leading NCD/nutrition organisations, including the UK Health Forum, Action on Sugar, and the World Obesity Federation.
