Hosted by LINKS, the NCD Alliance presented a webinar on 21 March 2019 to discuss the role of civil society organisations in the elimination of industrially produced trans fatty acids, with a focus on Mexico and Argentina.
The webinar featured Katie Dain, CEO of NCD Alliance, Lorena Allemandi, Director of Healthy Nutrition Policies, Interamerican Heart Foundation of Argentina, and Erick Antonio Ochoa, Director at Salud Justa and representative for public policies at Mexico SaludHable. The webinar was moderated by Dr Tom Frieden, President of Resolve to Save Lives.
Industrially produced trans fatty acids (iTFAs) are a toxin with no known health benefits, causing over half a million deaths per year. They can be replaced in foods without impacting their consistency and taste. Civil society organisations play an important role in advocating for the elimination of iTFAs from the food supply by informing the public, providing support for draft legislation/regulation and monitoring implementation.
