On 12 August 2014, the McCabe Centre for Law and Cancer and Melbourne Law School launched the book Regulating Tobacco, Alcohol and Unhealthy Foods: The Legal Issues. The book describes some of the legal implications surrounding the regulation of risk factors for NCDs.

Petition to prioritise heart-healthy environments

In preparation for World Heart Day, the World heart Federation is implementing a social media campaign engaging individuals across the world. An online global petition has been launched which calls on national and international leaders to recognize the global burden of CVD and to prioritize the need for heart healthy environments.

Pacific Partnership on NCDs supported by Forum Leaders

The 45th Summit of the Pacific Islands Forum in Palau from concluded on 1st August. During this summit a Forum Communiqué was adopted, with very positive implications for the NCD Response in the Pacific Region, and a key milestone in a longer term developing recognition of NCDs in the Region.

Leaders committed to support the Pacific Partnership for a Multi-sector Approach to Prevent and Control NCDs to be launched at the Third Conference on Small Island Developing States in Samoa in September.

PAHO urges countries to adopt salt reduction strategies

10 July, New York- At a side event in the margins of the UN NCD Review, PAHO/WHO urged governments to adopt salt intake reduction strategies as part of an overall effort to reduce preventable deaths from hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and other NCDs.

Tobacco Use and Dementia

The WHO and Alzheimer's Disease International (ADI) have colaunched a paper on tobacco and dementia, discussing links between smoking and the risk of developing dementia. The paper also suggests both population level and individual level interventions to address this health burden. Click here to read the paper.

NCD Countdown 2025: accountability for the 25 × 25 mortality reduction target

In the margins of the UN NCD Review, the Lancet NCD Action Group and the NCD Alliance are pleased to announce the launch of NCD Countdown 2025, an accoutnability initiative designed to capture NCD responses at the country level in order to improve government accountability and accelerate action among all stakeholders.
