Statement to WHO European Ministerial Conference on Nutrition and NCDs

The NCD Alliance with 6 other international and European organisations supported a joint statement delivered by the World Cancer Research Fund, to the WHO European Ministerial Conference on Nutrition and Non-Communicable Diseases.

The statement highlights the progresses that have been made in recent months in defining the global architecture for the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases, including targets and key policy commitments for unhealthy diet and obesity.

Calls to Tobacco Quitline in Senegal Soar 600%

"(New York and Dakar, Senegal) – Calls to Senegal’s national tobacco quit line surged 588 percent during April and May 2013, compared to the previous two months period, according to data released by the Ministry of Health and Social Action and World Lung Foundation today. The calls coincide with an intense national campaign to warn people about the harms of tobacco."

NCD Child releases paper on NCDs, young people, and technology

NCD Child released their latest issues paper, ‘Young People and NCDs: Harnessing the Culture of Technology” on 2 July 2013. The paper was launched in the margins of the 2013 UN Economic and Social Council's annual meeting, held in Geneva this year.

New WHO guidance on childhood obesity, undernutrition in LMICs

"5 JUNE 2013 | GENEVA/NEW YORK - Many low- and middle-income countries are neglecting overweight and obesity as major health threats, with policies in place to tackle undernutrition, but lack policies to halt the growing burden of diseases due to the rise of overweight, and obesity, according to new information released by WHO today."

Survey: Shortage of Social Media Resources in Global Tobacco Control

"(New York, USA) – In advance of World No Tobacco Day, World Lung Foundation (WLF) revealed the results of a recent survey into the use of social media by tobacco control advocates. Respondents from more than 91 countries – mostly from low-and-middle income countries targeted by tobacco industry as the next growth market – articulated a landscape of great enthusiasm but without formal approach."

A Major Victory at the World Health Assembly for NCDs

This years World Health Assembly (WHA) was a major moment for NCDs, marking the end of several ongoing consultation processes and putting in place the strong foundations of a global NCD framework.

During the week of WHA, countries began to earnestly discuss a draft “omnibus resolution” on NCDs. This resolution sought to combine major decisions and recommendations in a single, comprehensive resolution.
