Funding in a changing world: The role of private philanthropy in financing the response to noncommunicable diseases

Private philanthropy is a major actor in global health and sustainable development. Between 2020 and 2023, global philanthropy for development totalled US$68.2 billion, of which 40% was directed to health: the largest share of philanthropic giving to any sector. However, there is a fundamental mismatch between the financing of NCDs – like cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, chronic lung diseases, and mental health and neurological conditions – and the disease burden they represent.

The purpose of this report is to consider the role that private philanthropies can play in strengthening the NCD response, drawing on examples of what others are doing, signposting potential areas for investment, and stimulating further discussion.

This brief identifies five roles through which private philanthropies already strengthen the NCD response, illustrated by case studies showing how different types of funders play each role across diverse contexts. Drawing on a literature review, key informant interviews, and insights from the case studies, the brief then sets out seven actionable recommendations.
