100 years since the discovery of insulin and with much still to be done to improve the lives of people living with diabetes globally, the WHO launched a Global Diabetes Compact to stimulate action in April 2021 and a Resolution on diabetes was also passed at the 74th World Health Assembly (WHA).
Yet to put this into context, diabetes mortality for those aged between 30-70 years has increased by over 60% between 2000 and 2019, and half of adults living with type 2 diabetes do not have safe and continuous access to insulin. In addition, blood glucose testing is not available in government primary health care facilities in the 50 poorest countries of the world. On top of this, over the past year people living with diabetes have been exposed to further challenges such as their high risk to severe disease and potential death from COVID-19.
To ensure that the 74th WHA outcomes truly meet the needs of people living with diabetes and support the implementation of the WHO Global Diabetes Compact, the Coalition for Access to NCD Medicines & Products, Direct Relief, NCD Alliance and Novo Nordisk will convene on Friday 25th June, virtually, to explore the next steps for key stakeholders and for people living with diabetes worldwide.
