In preparation for World Heart Day, the World heart Federation is implementing a social media campaign engaging individuals across the world. An online global petition has been launched which calls on national and international leaders to recognize the global burden of CVD and to prioritize the need for heart healthy environments.

In preparation for the UN NCD Review, the President of the General Assembly H.E. John W Ashe hosted an informal interactive hearing for civil society on 19 June 2014 to discuss the successes and gaps in progress since 2011, and to identify priorities for NCDs going forward.

Tuberculosis today remains an epidemic in much of the world, causing the deaths of nearly one-and-a-half million people each year, mostly in developing countries. The theme of World TB Day 2014 is to "Reach the 3 Million". Of the 9 million people who suffer from TB each year, 3 million are "missed" by health systems; most often coming from the world’s poorest, most vulnerable communities.

Dr. Vera Luiza Da Costa e Silva will become head of the secretariat for the WHO Framework Convention On Tobacco Control in June. From Brazil and currently Coordinator of the Center for the Study of Tobacco and Health, National School of Public Health, Silva will work at WHO HQ in Geneva.
