Caribbean NCD Forum highlights region's role in 2018 HLM on NCDs

25th April 2018

Nearly 100 civil society and other key stakeholders gathered in Jamaica this week to ensure that the Caribbean is fully engaged in the 3rd UN High-Level Meeting (UNHLM) on NCDs.

Hosted by the Healthy Caribbean Coalition (HCC), the objectives of the Caribbean NCD Forum were to:

  • Take stock of NCD progress in the Caribbean
  • Harmonise Caribbean Community priority areas for the UNHLM 2018
  • Discuss strategies to encourage the highest level of political attendance at the 2018 UNHLM, and
  • Explore post-2018 strategies towards the achievement of 25x25 and SDGs.

The event included the Jamaica launch of the Childhood Obesity Prevention online petition, part of the HCC’s TooMuchJunk campaign. The petition calls on CARICOM Heads of Government to reduce childhood obesity through the enactment of policies and legislation aimed at curbing sales and promotion of junk food and sugar-sweetened beverages.

The Forum was held in collaboration with HCC partners: the Jamaica Ministry of Health, the NCD Alliance, the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) and the University of the West Indies Open Campus (UWI OC), together with HCC member organisations.

NCD Alliance CEO Katie Dain spoke at the Forum.
