Crucial role of civil society in achieving ‘25x25’ for NCDs highlighted at SIDS Conference

05th September 2014

The Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States concluded yesterday in Apia, Samoa. The NCD Alliance was represented by Ms Annabel Lyman, who made two statements on behalf of the NCD Alliance; one at the Side Event on Health and Non-communicable Diseases, and one at the Multi-stakeholder official partnership dialogue on Social development in Small Island Developing States, health and non-communicable diseases, youth and women.

“All major political commitments on NCDs reinforce the important role of civil society as an imperative to achieving progress in NCDs. Indeed, a vibrant and strong civil society movement is a fundamental strategy to reaching the global ‘25 by 25’ NCD mortality target”, said Ms Lyman.

“There are three primary roles CSOs must play in advancing the NCD response in the SIDS context – technical expertise and advocacy, accountability, and service delivery”.
