The US National Cancer Institute (NCI) has collaborated with the World Health Organization to release the report, “The Economics of Tobacco and Tobacco Control,” which provides the first comprehensive review of the economics of global tobacco control efforts since the 2003 adoption and the 2005 entry into force of the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.
The report discusses the current evidence base surrounding the economics of tobacco control - including tobacco use, tobacco growing, manufacturing and trade, tobacco product taxes and prices, and tobacco control policies and other interventions to reduce tobacco use and its consequences - and the economic implications of global tobacco control efforts.
In addition to a comprehensive summary of the existing scientific evidence, with a focus on low- and middle-income countries, the report concludes that evidence-based tobacco control interventions make sense from an economic as well as a public health standpoint.
