UN consultation on the right to food and the use of pesticides

16th November 2016

NCD Alliance will be submitting a response to the consultation of the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food, and the Special Rapporteur on the implications for human rights of the environmentally sound management and disposal of hazardous substances and wastes. We welcome any input from other organisations.

The UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food will focus her next annual report to the Human Rights Council on the human rights implications of the widespread use of hazardous pesticides on human rights, in particular the right to food.

Upon the invitation of the Special Rapporteur on the right to food, the report will be written jointly with the Special Rapporteur on human rights and hazardous substances and wastes. The report will be presented at the 34th session of the Human Rights Council in 2017.

The Special Rapporteurs are calling for inputs to help ascertain to what extent the right to food informs government policies with regard to the use of pesticides, and have invited States, intergovernmental organisations, national and international non-governmental organizations, national human rights institutions, business entities, United Nations agencies and entities, academia and all other interested stakeholders to contribute their views and perspectives in writing through a questionnaire.

The questionnaire can  be found on the websites of both Rapporteurs, at:

We look forward to your input, and also encourage you to share the questionnaire with relevant stakeholders.

Kindly submit your answers no later than 5 December 2016. All responses will be posted on the web pages of both Special Rapporteurs, unless you indicate otherwise.
