Update: High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development

07th July 2016

The first High-level Political Forum (HLPF) following the adoption of the 2030 Agenda will take place in New York 11 - 20 July. The HLPF is the main review mechanism for the 2030 Agenda, and will feature 22 voluntary national reviews of progress towards achieving the SDGs, roundtable discussions, and a general debate.

The roundtable sessions will begin on 11 July, and the high-level ministerial section will take place from 18 - 20 July; voluntary national reviews will be held from 19 - 20 July.

The roundtable sessions will focus on various themes of the 2030 Agenda, such as promoting an inclusive world by 2030, eliminating extreme poverty, fostering economic growth, and empowering girls and women.

draft resolution on the working methods of the HLPF over the next four years has been agreed. Member States have agreed to review a subset of goals every year to allow for an in depth discussion of each; SDG 3 on health is to be reviewed in 2017.

The HLPF provides an important opportunity for the NCD community to highlight how NCDs, and health more broadly, are integrated throughout the agenda.

As the majority of the determinants of health lie outside Goal 3, it is important for the NCD and health community to be consistently engaged throughout the process. Advocates can work with their governments to promote interlinkages among the goals and targets, and ensure health-related items are included in voluntary reviews presented during the HLPF.

Final negotiations on the Ministerial Declaration of the HLPF are ongoing, and an outcome is expected by 8 July. This Declaration will be adopted during the HLPF.

The schedule of side events is now posted on the website. There are several health related and NCD-specific side events being held during the HLPF (see attached calendar).

NCD Alliance, with the Permanent Missions of the Caribbean Community to the UN (CARICOM), will host an event on Tuesday 19 July from 10:00 – 12:00 in Conference Room A at UNHQ on NCDs Across the SDGs: A Call for Integrated Implementation. Invitations will be sent shortly.
