Updated letter to Habitat 3 co-facilitators

08th September 2016

On 20th July, in advance of negotiations in Surabaya, Indonesia, a recommendations letter developed by NCD Alliance and partners was sent to the Habitat 3 co-facilitators, and circulated to Member States and key representatives from UN Habitat and the World Health Organization.

The letter called for an increased focus on health and health related issues in the Habitat 3 Outcome Document, the New Urban Agenda. The letter was co-signed by a total of 48 civil society organisations.

The updated draft of the letter emerging from the Surabaya negotiations featured a significantly increase focus on health, and also issues including air quality, walking and cycling, and food and nutrition.

NCD Alliance and partners subsequently drafted a letter in follow up to congratulate the Habitat 3 co-facilitators on the progress made, and emphasising the need to protect the health-related language now included.  The letter was sent in advance of the intergovernmental negotiations taking place this week in New York.

The draft text of the New Urban Agenda will feed directly into the Habitat 3 meeting itself, taking place in Quito, Ecuador from the 17-20 October.
