Time To Refocus: Working Together to Support People Living with HIV and NCDs

The COVID-19 pandemic has illustrated the urgent need to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC) for all, to ensure the resilience of health systems to future health threats and to strengthen our collective responses. Today the pandemic is threatening progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and in particular the SDG for Health (SDG3), which was already off-track. The pandemic has had a disproportionate impact on people living with noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). Hypertension, cardiovascular disease and diabetes are the three most common underlying conditions in people who have died of COVID-19. NCDs are a critical barrier to achieving the SDGs and require collective commitment and action as they impose potential disability, out-of-pocket costs, reduced quality of life and undermine progress towards other global health targets such as those for HIV/AIDS and TB.
Objectives:
- Explore what is needed to make integrated NCD services a reality as we build back fairer from COVID-19, in particular given the mandate set out by the 2021 Political Declaration on HIV and AIDS.
- Share best practice integration examples from country, regional and global levels which reinforce the goal of UHC in particular exploring themes of service delivery, financing and monitoring and evaluation.
- Highlight the need for a coordinated multisectoral response and explore the roles of different stakeholders in ensuring roll out of integrated NCD services.

Facing Forward Launch : Amplifying the stories of the global NCD community to inspire change

After the outstanding performance of the Turning the Tide series, reaching 128.5 million impressions across BBC.com audiences from February 2020 to February 2021, the NCD Alliance and partners are now launching a second series, Facing Forward produced by BBC StoryWorks. This second series will continue to raise awareness of NCDs and highlight the stories of people who are living with NCDs across the globe, as well as those of the communities, institutions and private sector who are leading the way to prevent and control NCDs.
Facing Forward is a series of 25 short films and 10 articles from Lebanon, Ghana, Guinea, Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Kenya, Thailand and the Pacific Islands, amongst other countries. The pre-launch of this campaign will take place on 8 September, during the Global Week for Action on NCDs, and the first set of short films will be published on 28 September, which is highlighted through this launch event and panel discussion. A second set of mini-films will be published on 17 November 2021. The Facing Forward campaign will continue over 12 months. All the short films and articles will be available on both BBC.com and ncdalliance.org.
In this panel, we will share experiences and insights from the global NCD community, and consider how, by amplifying the stories of those affected by health issues, we can increase attention on the burden of NCDs, and inspire long lasting change.
UNGA 76 Online Side-Event (Government of Norway, WHO, NCD Alliance): Commemorating 10-years since the first Political Declaration on the Prevention and Control of NCDs (2011): reflections and hope

In 2011, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the first Political Declaration on the Prevention and Control of NCDs. This acknowledged that NCDs constitute one of the major challenges for development in the twenty-first century, undermine social and economic development throughout the world, and threaten the achievement of internationally agreed development goals.
In the decade since, we have seen intensified advocacy and action, leading to dramatic normative, institutional and operational progress. Yet, since the Declaration, 150 million lives have also been lost since the first UNHLM on NCDs. The world remains off-track to achieve SDG 3.4., and the discrepancy between stark human cost of NCDs (accounting for 74% of deaths globally in 2019) and overseas development assistance stubbornly persists.
On 27 September, please join WHO, the Government of Norway and the NCD Alliance for an engaging online-only event. Learn from the expertise of Member States, WHO staff, persons living with NCDs and civil society leaders on their reflections of the last 10 years of progress, championing successes and opportunities for the NCD agenda over the coming decade, and how WHO is developing a forthcoming implementation roadmap for 2023-2030 in support of achieving SDG target 3.4.
