Update on the WHO GCM/NCDs

The meeting report of the WHO GCM/NCD Dialogue on NCDs and development cooperation held on 20-21 April 2015 is now published on the WHO website. Download it here
The discussions among participants during the two-day dialogue clearly established that, while addressing NCDs must be country driven and financed to a significant degree through domestic resources, not all developing countries were in a position to address NCDs alone, and that consequently more catalytic support was needed from elsewhere, including from international development agencies, United Nations organizations, international financial institutions and NGOs.
Participants conveyed a sense of urgency in calling on governments and the international community to scale up action for the prevention and control of NCDs at local, national and global levels.
An open call for comments on the report will run until 31 August 2015 and enable stakeholders to continue the Dialogue virtually beyond the 20-21 April 2015 event. Comments should be submitted by email to [email protected] with “Dialogue report comments” in the subject line.
The report of the 2nd meeting of the GCM/NCD Working Group on Financing has been published here as well. Among its procedural outcomes: Decision on the timeline and modalities for the interim report, which was circulated to working group members in late May and will be posted on the WHO GCM/NCD webpage for the end of June. This report will be launched at a WHO side event at the third International Conference on Financing for Development (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, July 2015).
WHO GCM/NCD Working Groups are tasked with providing recommendations to the WHO Director-General on ways and means of encouraging countries to realise the commitments made by Heads of State and Government at the 2011 UN General Assembly High-level Meeting on NCDs.
During 2015, the Working Groups are focusing on two key issues: firstly, to call on the private sector to strengthen its contribution to the prevention and control of NCDs; and secondly, explore the provision of financial resources for NCD prevention and control. The members of the Working Groups are drawn from a roster of experts nominated by the Member States.
