Tobacco use is the one risk factor common to the major non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like cancer, cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory disease and diabetes. NCDs kill 35 million people yearly, of which 80 per cent are in low and middle income countries.
TAKE ACTION During the United Nations (UN) NCD Summit, 19-20 September 2011, FCA and its partners will advocate the important role that tobacco control can play in development. The NCD Alliance aims for the summit’s Outcomes Document to include specific commitments to rapid and effective implementation of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) - recognising that it provides the framework for international cooperation. Thanks to pressure from the FCA and its civil society partners - led by the NCD Alliance - on heads of state/ government the UN has agreed to create a civil society taskforce for the Summit. However, this victory is not complete and FCA is again calling on heads of state, yet this time to appoint an NCD Champion to work with the taskforce. During the United Nation’s (UN) summit on NCDs during 19-12 September 2011, The NCD Alliance and its partners will advocate the important role that tobacco control can play in development. You can download a copy of the letter here. The letter is also available in French, Spanish and Arabic.
