Cancer Research UK awarded 2020 WHO World No Tobacco Day Award

23rd June 2020

Cancer Research UK, a full member of the NCD Alliance, was awarded the World Health Organization (WHO) World No Tobacco Day Award, in appreciation of its advocacy efforts for comprehensive tobacco control policies in the UK, and contributions to tobacco taxation research and accelerated implementation of tobacco control measures globally.

Every year, the WHO recognizes individuals or organizations in each of the six WHO Regions for their accomplishments in the area of tobacco control. This recognition takes the form of WHO Director-General Special Recognition Award and World No Tobacco Day Awards.

I’m so thrilled to be accepting this WHO World No Tobacco Day award on behalf of Cancer Research UK. But our work is far from over. Tobacco products kill more than 8 million people every year and continues to be the leading cause of cancer. Cancer Research UK will work to bring forward the day when no one smokes by funding cutting-edge research, providing world-class health information and influencing government policy across the UK, the EU and internationally’ said Michelle Mitchell, CEO, Cancer Research UK.
