GENEVA – The NCD Alliance is pleased to welcome the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) as a Full Member of NCDA, to better articulate the case for the inclusion of oral health in the fight against noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). IADR sought to join the NCD Alliance because oral diseases are one of the world’s most prevalent NCDs, resulting in considerable health and economic burdens to populations, and do share common risk factors (unhealthy diets high in free sugars, use of tobacco and harmful consumption of alcohol) with the main NCDs (including cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, and mental and neurological conditions).

Lack of recognition from High-Level Meeting

Despite oral diseases affecting half the world’s population, last month’s United Nations (UN) Political Declaration resulting from the Third High-Level Meeting on NCDs failed to acknowledge oral diseases as an NCD, despite them having been recognized in the 2011 UN Political Declaration and addressed in the 2018 Report of the World Health Organization (WHO) High-level Commission on NCDs. IADR joins efforts with the FDI World Dental Federation, already a full member and NGO supporter of the NCD Alliance, to better articulate the case for the inclusion of oral health in the NCD response, together with governments, policy makers, and research funders.
