After consultations with its network, the NCD Alliance has provided feedback on the draft concept note of the WHO 13th General Programme of Work (GPW), which will guide the organization’s work in 2019-2023. The first draft of the GPW will be considered at a special session of the WHO Executive Board in November 22-23 November.
“The GPW must address NCDs as a strategic priority, reflecting the global burden of disease, and its economic impact, in its priority-setting”, said NCDA CEO Katie Dain.
“The next GPW should give strong attention to the broader determinants of health, including social, commercial and environmental determinants, and aim to improve policy coherence for health within the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,” Dain added.
According to WHO, on the recommendation of the Director-General the next GPW will focus on high-level policy directions, centred around the Sustainable Development Goals and in line with the D-G’s vision and priorities, as well as other global commitments.
Dain noted that more clarity will also be needed on how WHO seeks to place countries at the centre and become more operational.
