World Health Assembly 2015: Placing NCDs in the spotlight

30th April 2015

The World Health Assembly (WHA) which will take place from 18th to the 26th May is now just a few weeks away. The official discussions on NCDs have been scheduled for Friday 22nd and Saturday 23rd  and a wide range of NCD-related events will take place throughout the week. The NCD Alliance is organising a civil society pre-briefing on the 17th May, as well as two high-level events on how to implement an NCD target in the post-2015 agenda and the need for an integrated approach to achieve ‘25 by 25’ in partnership with ADI and WHF.

There will be numerous NCD related events taking place throughout the week and we anticipate that a number of key decisions will be taken on NCDs. These include:

  • Adoption of 10 NCD indicators which will be used to measure progress towards the 2014 NCD outcome document.
  • Adoption of the WHO Global Coordination Mechanism (GCM/NCD) work plan 2016-2017.

The official discussion on NCDs has been scheduled for the afternoon of Friday 22nd and is expected to run through to Saturday morning. There will also be technical papers presented on Preparations for the 3rd High Level Meeting on NCDs on Thursday 21st, Cancer Prevention and Control on Friday 22nd, and Climate and Health on Wednesday 20th.

Aside from this there is a huge range of NCD related side events across the schedule which are featured in our calendar. This is an exciting time for the NCD Community and this is definitely reflected in what will be taking place at the WHA.
