World conference to discuss social justice and tobacco

The World Conference on Tobacco or Health (WCTOH) is introducing a stream focused on social justice and tobacco at its 2018 meeting.
“For the first time in 50 years we are having a designated track … that’s going to look at issues around women and gender, vulnerable populations and poverty and indigenous people,” says Dr Lorraine Greaves, Senior Investigator at British Columbia’s Centre of Excellence for Women’s Health, on the WCTOH website.
The NCDA CEO Katie Dain will attend the conference in Cape Town, South Africa, and is speaking in a session focused on commercial determinants of health, Thursday from 16:30 to 18:00. Thursday will also feature the launch of the sixth edition of the Tobacco Atlas.
Ahead of the conference, Vital Strategies has launched a global campaign, Quit Big Tobacco. Aimed at organisations that work with Big Tobacco, the campaign calls on non-profits and businesses with health in their mission to pledge not to work with the tobacco industry or affiliated advertising agencies.
