    On the occasion of Ecobank Day and building on the momentum of the Global Week for Action on NCDs that took place September, the NCD Alliance and the Ecobank Foundation have joined forces to raise awareness of the scale, impact and urgency of NCDs in Africa, highlight and support the critical role of society organisations and community-led efforts in accelerating action from local to global levels, and strengthen political commitment on the urgency to invest into robust and resilient health systems.

    NCD Alliance calls on national leaders and the Global Fund Board to recognize the growing impact of NCDs on the physical and mental health and wellbeing of people living with and at risk of HIV, TB and malaria, and on the sustainability and resilience of health systems. We ask that the new strategy provides countries with clearer opportunities and more flexibility in funding to integrate NCD screening, diagnosis and care into programmes and services to address the linkages with HIV, TB and malaria.

    COVID-19 has brought to centre stage the most important health issue of our era, largely ignored by policymakers and the public to date: noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), the cause of 71% of global deaths per year. People living with NCDs, and particularly those living with cardiovascular disease (CVD)*, are at higher risk of severe symptoms and death from COVID-19. As a result, the urgent need for policy measures to protect cardiovascular health is more apparent than ever.
