How can civil society organisations better identify, manage and prevent Conflict of Interest?

20th October 2022

NCD Alliance will produce a Conflict of Interest Toolkit exploring how civil society organisations working on NCDs can better identify, prevent and manage conflict of interest.

Conflict of interest (COI) can occur when an organisation or member of an organisation is susceptible to a secondary interest (a vested interest in the outcome of the organisation's work) that unduly influences the independence or objectivity of professional judgement or actions regarding the organisation's primary interest. Civil society organisations working on NCDs or NCD-related issues, including all members of the NCD Alliance network, have a fundamental conflict of interest with health-harming industries such as tobacco, alcohol and fossil fuel industries as these industries prioritise commercial interests over the public health interest and their products and activities are harmful to health and may increase the risk of NCDs.

What is the COI Toolkit?

Managing conflict of interest and industry interference is an issue that applies across civil society organisations working on and around NCDs. Therefore, the purpose of the COI toolkit is to engage civil society in the importance of addressing industry interference within the NCD space and to equip civil society organisations with practical tools to identify, prevent and manage conflict of interest. The toolkit will aim to:

  • Explore NCD Alliance member's examples of experiencing industry interference in their work on NCDs and strategies they use to identify, prevent and manage this, including mechanisms that have been established to systematically manage conflict of interest.
  • Outline a set of practical tools that NCD Alliance members, and other civil society organisations working on NCDs, can use to better identify, prevent and manage conflict of interest within their daily operations and overall mission.

Fill out the COI Toolkit survey

We want to hear from you! The first stage of the toolkit is to gather responses from NCD Alliance members in this short survey. The survey asks questions about your experiences of industry interference and how you currently manage conflict of interest. The feedback received from the survey will inform the publication of the COI toolkit in 2023.
