With more than a fifth of the world's population currently living with a life-threatening noncommunicable disease (NCD), there is an imperative need to integrate NCD services at the primary healthcare level in order to safeguard the well-being of populations and to respond to the growing demand for care. The NCD agenda has grown steadily since the last UN High-Level Meeting on NCDs in 2018, moving away from the four major diseases approach (cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes and respiratory diseases) to include mental and neurological diseases. The NCD community is responding to these calls by building a more inclusive agenda based on the principle of "leaving no one behind", making sure it also addresses the growing burden of multimorbidity.
In addition to the regular coordination and knowledge exchange calls, the following areas and developments have been identified as an opportunity to leverage and catalyse action for an inclusive NCD agenda in 2021:
The PLAN on An Inclusive Agenda is a space for members to connect, reflect and catalyse action to move from siloed disease-specific policies to integrated and person-centred approaches. The PLAN serves as a springboard for change to coordinate advocacy strategies and support the implementation of comprehensive universal health coverage (UHC) benefit packages by mobilising civil society to expand current global NCD commitments.
NCDA full and associate members are invited to nominate up to two representatives from their organisations to take part in each PLAN, and will be actively engaged in the development of other Peer Learning Advocacy Networks. Nominate your representative(s)!
