The Advocacy Institute Accelerator Programme is a multi-year initiative that seeks to increase the capacity of established national NCD alliances to drive effective in-country NCD advocacy.

Annual training programmes are convened to increase the capacity of established NCD alliances to drive effective in-country NCD advocacy, and seize key global advocacy opportunities and strengthen links between global and national NCD action.

The Advocacy Institute Accelerator Programme seeks to build the knowledge and skills of national alliances to drive effective in-country advocacy, as well as engage in global decision-making spaces and mechanisms.

To support this, the NCD Alliance organises annual training programmes, tailored to and developed in accordance with the alliances’ capacity needs. Due to the restrictions imposed by COVID-19, the 2020 and 2021 training programmes have been held virtually using an interactive online learning platform.

NCDs and UHC Accelerator Programme Virtual Training 2020 (November 2020)

The NCDs and UHC Accelerator Programme Virtual Training 2020 aimed at increasing the capacity of NCD alliances to drive effective in-country NCD and UHC advocacy by increasing their knowledge and skills on UHC for NCDs, recognising opportunities during the COVID-19 context. The training’s curricurullum focused on the exploration of health system building blocks and how our knowldge and understnading of them can aid effective NCDs and UHC advocacy.

Training at glance

  • 26 representatives from the 10 participating alliances trained
  • 4 modules delivered over 4 weeks in November 2020
  • Faculty involved more than 10 experts and advocates from NCDA network

 Results of the training:

  • 91% of participants rated their experience as good/excellent. After completing the training
  • 96% of participants strongly agreed/agreed feeling confident in their knowledge of national, regional, and global advocacy opportunities on NCDs and UHC for NCDs

NCDs and UHC Accelerator Programme Virtual Training 2021 (June – July 2021)

Building on the 2020 NCDs and UHC Accelerator Training, the 2021 training programme took place between June and July 2021 and aimed at further strengthening in-country NCD and UHC advocacy capacity. This was done by taking a deeper dive into selected health system building blocks, as well as the broader concepts of conducting strategic advocacy for NCDs and UHC.

Training at glance

  • 27 representatives from the 11 participating alliances trained
  • 4 modules delivered over 8 weeks in June and July 2021
  • Faculty involved more than 20 experts and advocates from NCDA network

Results of the training:

  • Overall, 96% participants rated their experience of the training as good or excellent.
  • 96% of the participants strongly agreed/agreed felt more feeling confident in their knowledge of conducting strategic advocacy and advocacy planning NCDs and UHC.

NCD Prevention Accelerator Programne Virtual Training 2021 (coming up November 2021)

The NCD Prevention Accelerator Training will be launched in November 2021 with five modules exploring the cross-cutting themes related to advocacy for NCD prevention and the various risk-factors.

Previous Accelerator Programme Workshops (Phase 1, 2017 – 2019):

The first phase of the Accelerator Programme focused on training the five participating alliances on key global processes relating to NCD policy (such as the 2018 UN High Level Meeting on NCDs) and on the inner-workings of key global decision-making bodies – such as the World Health Organisation in Geneva and the United Nations in New York.

This has been done through three in-person workshops in 2017, 2018 and 2019 respectively, each convened around one of the milestone global health meetings.
